Three things I’ve realised or been reminded of during the current pandemic

  1. Students are as au fait with technology as many would have us believe. Just because a student can set the Sky+ box and is a champion gamer does not mean they can navigate their way onto an online platform and reset their password if needed!
  2. A far higher number of students than I had anticipated find it difficult to read an email and act upon the instructions it contains (this could of course be a problem with my writing style but I’m inclined to think not in this instance!).
  3. Maths seems to be head and shoulders above most other subjects in the range and quality of meaningful activities that are available on a range of online platforms (Dr Frost Maths, Hegarty Maths, Mathswatch etc.). On most such platforms students have access to online videos or lessons, have questions instantly marked to a high degree of accuracy, can practise freely, can receive personal feedback from their teachers along with a wealth of other features that lend themselves to effective long term learning.
